Locusts are mentioned several times in the Bible, indicating their significance to God. From Scripture, we learn that locusts are wise, voracious., and can move very fast. Locusts are compared to horses as preparing for battle in Isaiah 33:4.
They are immense in number and can be easily carried away by the wind, and fly in bands in an orderly fashion. The locust are clean and fit for food and during the time of John the Baptist, was used as food for the Baptist.
However, more often than not, God used the locusts to serve as a weapon toward punishment for disobedience and sin against Him.
We all have heard of the great biblical plague of Egypt written of in Exodus Chapter 10 where God brought a great plague throughout Egypt because pharaoh refused to let God’s people, the children of Israel, go and the locusts ate every tree and fruit of the land so there was no green or herbs left in all of the land of Egypt.
Locusts are mentioned numerous other times, being involved in plagues and famine against the people for unrepentance of sin.
2 Chronicles 7:13-14 King James Version
If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Deuteronomy 28:38 King James Version
Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather but little in; for the locust shall consume it.
1 Kings 8:37-38 King James Version
If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;
What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:
God even uses locusts against ungodly leaders:
Nahum 3:17 King James Version
Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.
Nahum 3:15 King James Version
There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.
God even uses the locusts against false teachers and apostasy
Revelation 9:3 King James Version
And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
So, while Australia is being stricken with the worst locust plague in 75 years, based upon these biblical verses, this gives us all something to seriously think and pray about.
