Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon of Shas used the opportunity of speaking to the Post, which publishes a monthly Christian Edition, to apologize to Christians worldwide, saying he hoped the incident would not inflame tensions between Jews and Christians.
Following the publication of the story on Tuesday, however, many messianic Jewish and other Christian goups expressed grave concern over the increasingly violent nature of anti-missionary activity in Israel. continues at link above.

And, The IsraelInsider also is reporting on this burning of the New Testaments, with a slight twist to the story. In any event, burning the Chistian New Testament by the Orthodox Jews of Israel is very immoral, and I hardly believe the apology given by Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon of Shas is sincere since the Shas Orthodox party of the Israeli government is part of the problem and endorses government sanctioned persecution of the messianics of Israel.

- Israeli Jews burned copies of the New Testament in the town of Ohr Yehuda after its deputy mayor called for a purge of missionary texts following an accelerating campaign by evangelists seeking to convert residents to Christianity. Israel's daily Ma'ariv carried a front-page story Tuesday about a bonfire of the New Testament and other Christian texts held in Ohr Yehuda on Monday at the prompting of Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon. A vehicle with a loudspeaker made its way down Nevei Rabin Street, calling on Jews to bring the copies of the new testament and other materials given to them by the messianic Jews for burning. Officials of the Shas religious party in Ohr Yehuda explained that missionaries are working fervently in the city.
