It appears that the Russians are moving in and plan on staying for awhile as a big Russian flotilla led by Admiral Kuznetsov carrier heads for the Syrian port, DEBKAFile is reporting:
"DEBKAfile’s military sources disclose that a powerful Russian naval contingent, led by the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov , left Murmansk on the Barents Sea Aug. 18 to dock at the Syrian Mediterranean port of Tartus Saturday, Aug. 23. It includes the Russian Navy’s biggest missile cruiser Moskva and at least four nuclear missile submarines." More
This brings us to the matter of Isaiah 17, and the destruction of Damascus and Damascus' date with destiny that I very briefly spoke about here that I believe will soon be fulfilled. Damascus, Syria has been around since the biblical patriarch Abraham and the Apostle Paul, but the Bible foretells its destruction in the well known biblical passages of Isaiah Chapter 17. Isaiah tells us that Damascus will cease being a city and will become a heap of ruins in the very first verse of Chapter 17. Damascus has never before stopped being a city, nor has it ever been destroyed in times past.
Isaiah amazingly even tells us who will cause the destruction of Damascus in verse nine:
Israel will do what it has to do to survive, as it has in the past major wars of 1948, 1956, 1967 , 1973 with its hostile Arab neighbors and Damascus, Syria this time will be completely destroyed. The stakes are high in this fight for Israel's survival because it's a matter of destroy or be destroyed, and this war will involve nukes. Prime Minister Olmert has issued a statement with a very ominous warning in ynetnews August 19, 2008:
Olmert: No Holding Back Against HizbullahPrime minister tours Homefront Command bases, responds to the possibility of renewed attacks in northern Israel, states Israel will go all out if 'Lebanon becomes a land of Hizbullah'
It's no secret that Hizbullah is supplied and sponsored by Syria, and the Syrian government continues to provide political and material support to Hizbullah and political support to Palestinian terrorist groups. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), HAMAS, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP), and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), among others, base their external leadership in Damascus, and Hizbullah is operating just a few miles north of Israel, and by what P.M. Olmert has stated in the above article, it's not business as usual. This sounds very serious and I think he means business:
quote:
"If Lebanon becomes a "land of Hizbullah", however, the rules of the game will apparently change. Olmert suspects that a Hizbullah-led Lebanon will lead to a war in which Israel will be under a comprehensive attack. "There will no longer be a situation of distant fighting, where major cities continue with life as usual. The war will reach the cities and homes of Israeli citizens and our enemy's objective will be to target the homefront," he elaborated.
At that point, "we will be forced to bring an end to hostilities quickly, at the smallest possible cost, using our comparative advantage," Olmert said.
As Christians, we need to be in prayer for Israel and each other, and the lost as we watch these biblical events happen right before our very eyes.
