Wildfires Destroy 41 Homes In Western Australia

While the northeastern residents of Australia are still assessing the horrific damage from an unprecedented cyclone Yasi last week, two wildfires broke out in western Australia, one on the outskirts of the capital city Perth being fanned by gusting winds, and has destroyed 41 homes, causing the evacuation of several residents, and one fire in Swan Valley has largely been brought under control, but another in the communities of Roleystone and Kelmscott remained unpredictable in pockets, according to the authority. The two blazes have razed 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) of forested land to the north and southeast of Perth since Saturday, Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman Alan Gale said. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation.

One fire in Swan Valley has largely been brought under control, but another in the communities of Roleystone and Kelmscott remained unpredictable in pockets, according to the authority.
