Cyclone Yasi, the biggest ever to cross Queensland since 1918, a category 5 Yasi, packing winds of up to 290km/h, (182 mph) with the worst of the winds, gusting to 185km/h, struck early this morning with winds and raging seas.
And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Luke 21:25
One reporter said “it sounds like a thousand fighter jets screaming past the window. It’s incredible.”We are indeed seeing Jesus’ prediction from Luke's Gospel the distress of nations with perplexity upon the earth with the rising and tossing of the sea coming to pass, from Cyclone Yasi and going back to the end of 2004 with the great Tsunami that literally touched the entire world, and Katrina in 2005. The Lord has indeed used the weather all through the Old Testament when dealing with the rebellious Israelites, He is using it now all around the world, and He will use it in the coming near future as our current age comes to a climatic end when God deals with rebellious nations. No nation is exempt.
As I look around the world today and see all of the catastrophic disasters occurring simultaneously, I am reminded that the Lord will give every nation their turn in disaster from weather, earthquakes, volcanos, cyclones and the like more and more as we approach the coming of the Lord, to get our attention to turn to Him. For those of us who know Jesus personally and intimately, we can rejoice, and unlike Peter, keep our eyes not on the storm and wind around us, but fixed upon the Saviour lest we sink in these perilous storms of life going on all around us.
When speaking of the earth, Isaiah wrote"The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word." "The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish." 24:3,4
And in the future Gog-Magog War written about in Ezekiel Chapter 38, the weather will play an important role in defeating Gog and his armies who come against Israel with torrential rain and hail. 22.
The category five storm made landfall between Townsville and Cairns but concentrated its fury on the 100-kilometre strip of coast around Mission Beach, between Cardwell and Innisfail, an area devastated by cyclone Larry in 2006.The town of Mission Beach was hit by the full force of the storm at midnight. It tore apart buildings, ripped up trees, and more than 90,000 sat through the night in the dark when power supplies were cut. Read about it here
The Australian reports that Queensland Premier Anna Bligh last night said power outages were escalating, with Townsville the hardest hit, where 40,000 homes were without power. At the time this edition of The Australian went to press, 89,000 homes were without electricity
Ms Bligh warned record high sea s were to be expected and that waves of 9.5m had been recorded off Townsville, the highest level since measurements began in 1975. Speaking a few hours before the cyclone was due to strike, the Premier warned the nation to brace for "devastation and heartbreak on an unprecedented scale."
"We as as a community, as Queenslanders and Australians, need to brace ourselves for what we might find when we wake up. Without doubt we are set to discover scenes of devastation and heartbreak on an unprecedented scale," Ms Bligh said. "This cyclone is like nothing we have ever dealt with before as a nation." With many people defying evacuation orders, despite the presence of soldiers and police, Mr Stewart warned that emergency services might not be able to reach them until the danger had passed.
"My message was simply that everyone has to be a first responder in these situations," Mr Stewart said. Read more
